DeremCo at Milan Design Week 2025: Pilot Strategy 2 – Thermo-Chemical Reprocessing
DeremCo at Milan Design Week 2025: Pilot Strategy 2 – Thermo-Chemical Reprocessing
Tecnalia
TECNALIA is the largest centre of applied research and technological development in Spain,
a benchmark in Europe and a member of the Basque Research and Technology Alliance. It
collaborates with companies and institutions to improve their competitiveness, people's
quality of life and achieve sustainable growth, thanks to a team of more than 1,500 people
committed to building a better world through technological research and innovation. That is
why TECNALIA’s research has a real impact on society and generates benefits in the form of
quality of life and progress.
Its main scopes of action are: smart manufacturing, digital transformation, energy transition,
sustainable mobility, health and food, urban ecosystem and circular economy.
In the latest awareness and positioning study carried out by the European Research Survey
ERS in 2022, TECNALIA occupies the first position in R+D+i brand awareness.
In DEREMCO project, TECNALIA is the Basque Country Hub Leader, coordinating the
activity dealing with Strategy 2 (thermal recycling).
The main technical role in the project is to recondition (re-sizing) recycled glass and carbon
fibers for new uses via the development of intermediate materials (thermoplastic pellets for
plastic injection) and mats or non-woven fabrics for RTM (resin transfer molding) process for
composites materials.
FiberEUseTech
Fibereuse Tech is a startup born in 2023 to address the hurdles in GFRP recycling. Thanks to the expertise of the team in GFRP treatment, from size reduction to reprocessing, it is able to implement real and robust circular value-chains, following a cross-sectorial demand-driven approach.
The activities of Fibereuse Tech in DeremCo covered the preparation of recycled material, both through mechanical and thermal processes, together with the development of mats embedding recycled glass fibers for different applications, from construction to automotive, sports equipment or marine.
The future goal is to commercialize these mats and produce design products that incorporate recycled materials.
Centrocot
Centrocot is a certification, research and training center for textile, apparel and fashion companies. With its Multi-Lab, Centrocot supports business innovation in the recycling of textile materials.
In DeremCo project, Centrocot develops a textile hybrid material using recycled synthetic fibers from textile waste and recycled glass and carbon fibers from composite waste. This material is used to realize braids, ropes, and nets for building, automotive, sport, furniture, design. Moreover, Centrocot uses scraps from the previous activities to create mats for thermal and acoustic insulation.
Future activities of Centrocot will be aimed to develop technological solutions to valorize textile waste by material recycling and products testing.
Birziplastik
Birziplastik is an authorised waste manager, specialising in the transformation of industrial
plastic waste into recycled raw materials. We offer solutions such as mechanical and thermal recycling, guaranteeing a certified process without additional waste. Our mission is to recover polymer raw materials, optimising our customers' value chain and contributing to a more sustainable future.
Birziplastik has carried out an innovative work package within the Deremco project, with the aim of recovering critical waste from the aeronautical industry and reintroducing it into the automotive industry. The company has implemented a process that includes the separation of resin from composites by pyrolysis, followed by mechanical recycling that allows the creation of pellets reinforced with carbon fibres. As an example of its progress, a brake pedal has been manufactured using polyamide containing 20% recycled carbon fibre.
Birziplastik's next steps will be to validate this pedal with customer performance tests and to commercially exploit this innovation within the organization to offer circular solutions to automotive and aeronautical parts manufacturers.
Tampere University
Tampere University is Finland’s leading multidisciplinary university, with strengths in technology, health, and society. With cutting-edge research and innovation, we drive solutions for global challenges and societal impact.
In the DeremCo, our focus is on improving the use of recycled glass and carbon fibers by developing practical surface treatments for them. These treatments improve processing of the reinforcements and fiber-matrix interface, which enable high-performance reuse in new applications.
We solve global challenges with research, innovation, and international collaboration.
